Bridges at Bent Creek Residents Start HomeBrewing Club
MECHANICSBURG, PA, February 25, 2010 – Senior living communities like the Bridges of Bent Creek in Mechanicsburg, Pa, offer more than just knitting, cooking and craft clubs. A new “homebrewing” club has several male residents enthused about learning to brew a variety of beers and ales right in the comfort of their home at the Bridges. Residents will also tour Troegs Brewing Company in Harrisburg, Saturday, Feb. 27, at 11: 45 a.m. and sample various beers that they brew.
According to Cura Hospitality Director of Dining Services Andrew Kendall, “Our goal is to create opportunities for residents that are more conducive to socialization. Our brew club also lends itself to an activity our male residents enjoy and used to do prior to moving to the Bridges.”
Marty Haverstock, 93, a brew club member, recalls brewing “moon shine” during prohibition in the basement of his father’s home. “I did it to make a little money, but instead blew up my father’s basement. My home brewing didn’t last too long after that,” laughs Haverstock. Another resident, Stanley Bingham, 85, a retired dairy farmer, also likes to participate. “I used to brew beer when I was in the service during WWII. I enjoy the club, it gives me something to do,” says Bingham. When asked what his favorite beer is, Bingham replies “I like them all”.
Kendall started the Bridges homebrew club in late 2009 and holds brew club gatherings monthly where residents learn about different kinds of beer, the facets of the beer brewing process and step-by-step instructions on how to brew the beer of their choice.
Residents have already brewed Blonde Ale and are currently fermenting a Belgium Wheat. The next beer will be an Oatmeal Stout. To satisfy the tastes of residents who want something non-alcoholic, a root beer will soon be brewed. The best and probably most important part of the process is the tastings. All Bridges of Bent Creek residents have the opportunity to sample the fruits of the brew club’s labor and many will request a glass to complement their meal.
