Phoebe Terrace Residents Participate in Cooking Demonstration
Featuring Italian Foods, Tossing Pizza
WHAT: Residents of Phoebe Terrace Retirement Community will be “chefs for the day” when they work with executive chefs to prepare pizzas, calzones and Focaccia breads from scratch during Phoebe’s first Italian cooking demonstration.
According to Cura Hospitality Director of Dining Services Kim Wilson, “As the food service provider, our goal is to create culture change opportunities for residents that are more conducive to socialization. Activities such as cooking demonstrations also lend itself to an activity our male residents even enjoy and used to do prior to moving to Phoebe.”
Joe Ross, 87, is one of the participants who shares the first time he learned about pizza. “In the 1950’s I marveled at the pizza the Italian cooks in New Jersey called ‘tomato pies’. After moving to Center Valley, Pa my wife and I enjoyed ‘garbage pizza’ (a pizza with everything on it) that cooks prepared at the Upper Saucon Fire House.” Today Ross prepares individual pizzas in his apartment and looks forward to learning about how to create pizzas with a variety of toppings.
An Allentown native, Sara Heintzelman, 82, remembers making her pizza dough from scratch. “I would go to my girlfriend’s house and together we would make the dough, stretching it and topping it with tomatoes, cheese, peppers, onions and pepperoni.”
Mary Jane Lentz, 85, was a basic cook because she had nine children. “I have no experience with preparing pizzas,” she laughs. “I’ve been here a year and a half and enjoy the sense of community at Phoebe. I have time for so many activities like ‘tossing’ pizzas during our demonstration.”
Italian foods that our “chefs for the day” prepare will be served to residents who wish to sample the fruits of their labor.
